June 2008 Volume 2 No.6

A Grand Holiday in the Heat of Summer

As the rains stop pouring and cool gives way to hot, we start thinking of fine-tuning the air conditioning units, buying enough insect repellent, and airing out the rugs. The windows have been cleaned, the floor polished, the barbecue grill primed up for T-bones, bratwurst sausages, and chilli peppers.

When all of our summer home rituals have been taken care of, we can sit back and think, ah – holidays! Somehow summer isn’t the same without a holiday. It’s time to browse through those travel magazines.

Taking a holiday is a universal practice among different cultures. Countries consider family holidays as activities worthy of ceremony. Planning well in advance and confirming those early bird reservations for accommodations and transportation make for sound logistics and priority management. What we do so efficiently in the office must deserve the same kind of attention to the most minute of holiday details. And when it comes to family holidays, no detail is really ever that minute.

June is the time of the year when there’s a gradual build-up of frenetic activity. In just days and weeks, the European autobahns and autoroutes will come alive with vacationers cruising along in their “packed the entire house” RVs. It’s the same in the United States and Canada. Hordes of recreational vehicles take to the highways, beltways and freeways and you can tell from their smiling faces that they’ve temporarily shelved their work ethic and gone hedonistic, at least for a few weeks.

For some avid vacationers, injecting themes into annual holidays is one way of focusing intelligently on a set of activities with the relevant itineraries that accompany such activities.

If last year’s holiday was spent on the beach, perhaps this year will be amusement parks or vineyards. Three years ago, museums and science centres were on the holiday agenda, and while the children and teens marvelled at the paintings, sculptures, and 3D images of the dinosaurs, they would not want to do that routine again too soon.

Whatever this year’s theme is, remember that haste makes waste. Plan slowly and carefully so that your holiday budget does not get out of kilter. With an ability to foresee the unpredictable based on previous years’ experiences, the question of money can be dealt with efficiently. If you bring a sufficient number of medications, lotions, and first aid supplies for example, you don’t have to go scampering around for a drugstore and find out how much more expensive they are overseas. Plan for the unexpected.

A holiday is meant to be a bonding of family ties, a renewal of friendships between brother and sister, husband and wife, nanny and kids. A holiday means open and honest communication minus the stress. Don’t forget, it’s when a sense of humour can also come handy!

Our next article will talk about how to keep young kids on a family holiday from getting restless and bored.

Patio’s Coming to Life Again!

Lets get the party started.!

Ever noticed how the store fliers are suddenly bursting with the colors of summer? Have you observed that patio furniture has again changed design and material? Terrace equipment and accessories are shedding off the old look and taking on a new shape and hue.

Décor outlets are rushing to get their summer line up of dishes, pot holders, barbecue tools, iced tea glasses, banana split boats and new salad bowls advertised so that they come out at the same time when the ladies are preparing their shopping lists.

The next corporate barbecue is a week away and your husband’s boss is attending!

What to do, what to do…

The patio certainly needs to come alive, and that pool man has to be scheduled so you can get some sparkling blue water into that gaping hole. The tall glasses with the multi color polka dots should probably give way to new glasses with floral designs or straight two toned color stripes.

Remember how you ran out of those corn holders? Make sure they get thrown into the list.

The wrought iron chairs need cheerful cushions in light, airy material. The bushes have to be trimmed and the lawn has to get a fresh manicured look.

Summer is such a memorable time of the year. Entertaining right is more than just dolling up the patio and bringing out those eye-catching dishes and glasses. Be considerate too. Plan ahead for insect spraying, you don’t want to spoil the fun by having scratching guests seeking refuge inside the house!

Like most organisations that are well-managed, family holidays require open communication lines between crew members and detailed planning, where the effort to respect everyone’s wishes can translate into rewarding dividends emotionally.

Whats on the Grill?

Enjoy a delicious Healthy Turkey Burger

Deb`s favorite

All you need:

1 pound ground turkey

1 tablespoon green onion

1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon reduced sodium soy sauce

1/8 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 red onion

1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil

1 slice American low fat cheese

1/2 cup frozen yellow corn

3 tablespoons chicken stock, fat free, low sodium

1 cup fresh green beans

2 teaspoons margarine, canola-based, trans-fat free

2 cups tossed green salad

2 tablespoons salad dressing, favorite flavor, fat free

Next

Preheat broiler or start grill.

Combine ground turkey breast with chopped green onion, garlic powder, soy sauce, and black pepper; mix well. Form into a patty and set aside.

Wash and peel red onion; slice off 1/4 of it and brush with olive oil. (Save remaining onion for another use.) Grill or broil turkey burger and onion slices until turkey is no longer pink inside and juices run clear, and onion is crisp tender and lightly charred. Place slice of cheese on burger and heat until melted.

While burger is cooking, wash and trim green beans, if using fresh.
Steam corn in 1 tablespoon of chicken stock and green beans in 2 tablespoons of chicken stock in microwave or on stovetop until crisp tender. Melt 1 teaspoon of margarine onto each when ready to serve.

Assemble tossed salad with a variety of washed salad greens and vegetables, and toss with your favorite fat free salad dressing.

Yummy...The entire family will love it.

Note: Not only is turkey low in fat, its also very affordable.
